5 December set to draw attention to the critical importance of soil for food security

World Food Day was established by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation in 1979 and is celebrated each year on 16 October, the day FAO was founded in 1945.

The FAO is the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and is headquartered in Rome (www.fao.org). The main goal of the organisation is to achieve food security for all. To do so, FAO tries to raise levels of nutrition, to improve agricultural productivity, to better the lives of rural populations and to contribute to the growth of the world economy.
