The Alliance for Internet of Things Innovation (AIOTI) was initiated by the European Commission in order to develop and support the dialogue and interaction among the Internet of Things (IoT) various players in Europe both horizontally and vertically in different sectors. One of these sector was agriculture. The overall goal of this European Commission's initiative was the creation of a dynamic European IoT ecosystem to unleash the potential of the IoT. This ecosystem, built on the work of the IoT Research Cluster (IERC), seeks to spill over innovation across industries and business sectors of IoT transforming ideas into solutions and business models.

The Alliance succeeded to become a global influencer on IoT technology. The AIOTI converted to a European association based in Brussels on 22 September 2016. CEMA became a member and two of its companies became even founding members.
Work is divided in horizontal themes like IoT standardisation, and IoT policies, and vertical themes like smart cities, smart mobility but also smart farming.

CEMA together with industry experts fully support and contribute to the specific topics led by Working Group 6 on Smart Farming. The main role of WG6 is to facilitate the widespread adoption of IoT technologies within the agri-food sector while other actions of the group would be aligned with the following 5 AIOTI pillars:

  1. Ecosystem creation
  2. Alignment with already existing European initiatives
  3. Research and Innovation
  4. Contribution to European policies
  5. Collaboration with Member States
