CEMA President Thierry Krier represented the European agricultural machinery industry at 10th edition of the Congress of European Farmers, which took place from 12th to 14th October in Šibenik, Croatia. The event was organized by COPA COGECA, the European association of farmers and agri-cooperatives.  

CEMA’s contribution was framed within the panel “Digital solutions for monitoring and communicating farmers’ environmental performance”. Mr Krier shared the stage with Zoltan Szantoi, Land Applications Scientist from ESA (European Space Agency), Maria Skovager Østergaard, Farmer and Chief Consultant from the Danish Agriculture and Food Council, and Roberto Rodriguez Alvarez, Sub-Director of the Direct aid Spanish Agricultural Guarantee Fund. The session was moderated by Natassa Anotoniou, Project Officer of EARSC (European Association of Remote Sensing Companies).

The panellists discussed the role of digital solutions in farms and outlined the importance of new technologies that are accessible and affordable for the sector. Mr. Krier brought forward the commitment undertaken by the ag machinery industry to develop tools and technologies that help farmers increase their efficiency and well as create resilient and more sustainable agricultural systems. While many solutions are already available on the market, European farmers need more investment support for the uptake to be significant.

The CEMA President underlined a few priorities of the industry when it comes to its relationship with the farmers. He mentioned that, as stated in the Code of Conduct on agricultural data sharing by contractual agreement, CEMA strongly supports farmer’s ownership of the data. He also referred to the importance of ensuring the interoperability of farming equipment both among different manufacturers but also among service providers and potentially government agencies that are part of the farming ecosystem, emphasising the complexity of the processes leading to it.

The Congress provided the chance for the CEMA President to also meet Mrs. Christiane Lambert (FNSEA, FR), just was just re-elected as President of COPA, the Committee of Professional Agricultural Organisations). The Presidents exchanged on future opportunities for cooperation among the manufacturers and the farmers. CEMA reinforced its dedication to serve the sector and the customers efficient and advantageous ways for all parties.
