BBI JU Info Day 2020Wednesday 22nd April 2020, the Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) organized #BBIinfoday Virtual Info Day 2020. This time in the virtual form, due to the safety and health measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, the event was organized for the seventh time and web-streaming allowed to join even the participants out of Brussels.

The BBI JU represents, while operating under the European Programme Horizon 2020,  a public-private partnership between the EU and the Bio-based Industries Consortium. Their assignment is to implement the Strategic Innovation and Research Agenda (SIRA) developed by the industry with the validation of the European Commission.

As BBI JU explains, SIRA2030 sets out the main technological and innovation challenges to establish a sustainable and competitive bio-based industry in Europe:

  • Creating new business models to integrate strategic partners: primary and market sectors.
  • Accelerating the commercialisation of sustainable solutions in a circular bioeconomy.
  • Establishing carbon-neutral operations to mitigate climate change.
  • Establishing new purchasing and consumption patterns for a circular bio-society.

as well as

  • Secure human capital with the needed skills and personal skills.
  • Obtain political support towards an enabling policy framework.

Phillipe Mengal, Executive director of BBI JU, pointed out that implementing SIRA leads to develop sustainable and competitive bio based industries in Europe with the objectives of Developing new technologies – RIA, Demonstrating business models – DEMO and Setting-up flagship biorefinery plants – FLAG.

The event was focused on the 2020 Call for proposals, the BBI JU 2020 Work Programme, and the organizers also set aside part of the event for the interactive Q&A sessions.

Call for proposals represents the yearly BBI JU’s action supporting research, demonstration and deployment activities enabling the collaboration between stakeholders along entire value chain which covers: primary production of biomass, processing industries and final use. This year’s call has four strategic orientations:

  • Strategic Orientation 1 – Feedstock: Foster supply of sustainable biomass-feedstock to feed both existing and new value chains
  • Strategic Orientation 2 – Process: Optimise efficient processing for integrated biorefineries through R&D&I
  • Strategic Orientation 3 - Products: Develop innovative bio-based products for identified market applications
  • Strategic Orientation 4 - Market Uptake: Create and accelerate the market uptake of bio-based products and applications
